Influence of Natural Local Factors on Snow Cover Pollution (on the Example of the Pechenga Area)

The purpose of the work is the accumulation account method of sulphate, nickel and copper in the snow of the local pollution zone of the industrial complex "Pechenganikel". The basic task of studying character of formation and pollution of snow cover in the territory having crossed relief has been solved. On the basis of five years' experiment the model of aerotechnogenic pollution of the snow cover in landscapes of the local zone has been developed. According to the data of annual emissions of the industrial complex, distribution of wind and amount of deposits on the meteostation "Nikel" for a winter period the model provides:

  • Representation of the material in the form of isoline display of modern, retrospective and perspective accumulation of water stock, sulphates, nickel and copper in snow for any winter period, and also integrated accumulation of polluting substances and water stock with an increasing result from the moment of emission source occurrence;
  • calculation of water stock and polluter accumulation on the area of drainage pools and other natural and territorial complexes;
  • the reverse task decision: snow pollution measuring in control points to define emission of sulphate, nickel and copper from the enterprise.

The model can be applied in other northern areas of the Russian Federation with similar physico-geographical and climatic conditions. The model basis are dependences of the deposit amount from water stock in the same landscapes and also dependences of snow polluter contents from a relief and distance up to a source of emissions.

Seismic monitoring and preliminary estimation of seismicity of the Verkhne-Tuloma Hydroelectric Plant district

The paper has considered the preliminary results of the researches of seismic activity of the Verkhne-Tuloma hydroelectric plant district characterised by a composite geological structure with a net of repeatedly activized faults of different age, that means the possibility of heightened seismicity. Some historical information about the seismic activity of the district have proved this fact. Besides, in the work some methodical aspects of seismological researches of seismomonitoring peculiarities under the conditions of the global technological anthropological influence on the surface of the Earth crust have been presented. In the last section the modern system of the seismoactivity monitoring of the Kola Peninsula has been analysed.

On results of observations on the Apatity infrasound complex

The geo-cemented stone on basis of the magnesium-ferrous slag and alkaline silicate solution has been obtained. It has been proved that ferriferous layered hydro alumina silicates (nontronite, limonite) and hydro pomegranates are formed as a result of hardening astringent based on the thin-grinding low slag and alkaline silicates' solution. Presence of water-resistant rock-forming silicate materials provides endurance of the cemented stone. The sorption properties of the synthesized materials from modeling solutions and real technological waste water of one of the Murmansk region enterprises have been studied. The saturated (by radionuclides) geo-cemented stone has been immobilized in the geo-polymeric cement structure. Tests on radionuclide lixiviation from the prepared compounds have been carried out. The lixiviation velocity has been proved to be considerably below normative requirements.

Analysis of infrasonic signals generated by technogenic sources

In the paper the power consumption of the consumer power system is considered as value inverted to the electrical power factor. The power consumption reduction method and device for its realization by increasing the electrical power factor has been proposed.

Seasonal character of seismicity in the region of Spitsbergen Archipelago

Deposits and prospective occurrences of certain strategic species of minerals – Cu, Ni, Pt, Au and others – defined on the basis of the most important features of geodynamics and magmatism of various Neoarchean and Early Proterozoic formations of the Kola Province have been presented. Indicating isotopic characteristics of Pt-Pd and Cu-Ni ore-bearing basic intrusions (the Pana and Pechenga types respectively), which occurred in different epochs (stages) of the East-Scandinavian Large Igneous province (EScLIP) have been discussed.

Criteria of explosions and earthquakes identification for estimation of seismic danger of the region

The system of seismic monitoring of the Kola Peninsula and adjacent areas has been described. Criteria of discrimination of explosions and earthquakes have been considered. It is shown that P/S body waves amplitudes ratio that is commonly used for explosion and earthquakes discrimination is not reliable in some cases. It is noticed that spectra of many man-caused seismic events vary slowly in time. A quantitative estimation of a spectrum variance in time has been developed. It can be used as a criterion of man-made events discrimination. Infrasonic signals registered by microbarographs and seismometers after seismic events confirm their explosive origin. Taking into account the criteria we have revised our data base of earthquakes. As a result of retrospective (since 1992) analysis of seismic events of the base an improved picture of seismic activity on the Kola Peninsula and adjacent areas has been developed.

Modeling of seismic location in three-dimensional media

The description and principle of operation of the Seismic configurator programme developed in the Kola branch of Geophysical Survey of RAS have been presented. The programme allows a user to specify 3D seismic medium velocity models, to locate seismic events and to model location errors caused by uncertainties of travel time models and onset picking errors. A new approach to modeling (the seismic medium is replaced by a random graph consisting of large number of vertices and edges) has been applied. Models have been specified by a simple parameters description language.
